WILD Edible and Medicinal Plants of the Sierra Nevada

Cinquefoil

Habitat and Range
This herb is most often found in dry soils but can also be commonly found in moist soil throughout the Sierra up to 12,000 ft. It blooms from May to August.

Physical Description
Sticky Cinquefoil is an erect perennial that stands about two feet tall when in flower. The basal leaves grow from a stout rhizome that is just beneath the surface. Few leaves are cauline (borne on the main stem). Each leaf is pinnately divided into 5-7 serrated leaflets with the terminal leaflet being the largest. The stems and leaves are densely hairy and glandular (hence the name Sticky Cinquefoil). The small flower has white petals and many yellow stamens.

Food Uses
All species of Potentilla have leaves that can be steeped into tea or added to other tea blends. Drink in small amounts. CAUTION: Use in moderation. The entire Potentilla genus contains tannins that are astringent by nature, but should not be consumed in large quantities.

Medicinal Uses
Potentilla spp are named for their potent medicinal qualities. The leaf tea is an excellent astringent, but the whole herb can be used to make a suitable medicinal tea. The tea taken internally will reduce inflammation and heal ulcers of the stomach and esophagus. It is also said that Potentilla can help reduce diarrhea.
